# Can instrument file have more than 432 controls?

It is obvious that a preset can only have max 432 controls (36 \* 12). But, it is logical to assume that an instrument file can have any number of controls, since it is just a blueprint to make presets out of it. Is that a correct assumption?

@martin, I am spawning off new threads when I think the question is different enough from other existing content, since it could help with searches and ‘similar threads’ identification I guess. Let me know if you see this as too much spam and I will temper my eagerness 😃.

Yes, that is correct assumption. There is no limit on number of the controls in the instrument file.
