Mackie Control Universe for RME Total Mix and Fireface UCX

I had been looking for a long time for a way to control my Fireface UCX / TotalMix FX from a compact Mackie controller. While this preset is optimized for TotalMix — and in parts specifically for the UCX — it should be easy to adapt or extend for other Mackie Control tasks as well.

The preset consists of 3 pages. The first 4 columns change their functions from page to page, while columns 5 and 6 stay the same across all 3 pages.

Column 6 holds the Main fader. It can be controlled on any of the three pages — via the 6th encoder in the bottom row, regardless of which of the Electra One’s display rows is currently active. Column 5 contains 6 pads for switching between channels (in the Mackie protocol), between rows in TotalMix (Inputs, Software Playback, Outputs), or between the three pages of the preset.

Page 1 – Mixer: The top 4 rows contain the core of the mixer: 8 pan controls and an 8 × 4 array of LEDs showing the Select, Mute, Solo and REC status of each channel. There are also 8 LCD areas displaying the channel names, 8 VU meters and 8 channel faders. Below these sit 6 pads with TotalMix functions and 2 bank pads.

Page 2 – Mute, Solo, REC: For each channel, three pads allow you to set the channel to Mute, Solo or REC, with the current status shown by the corresponding LEDs. 8 LCD areas and VU meters help you keep track of the channels.

Page 3 – F1–F12 and Select: The MCU function keys let you load the 8 snapshots in TotalMix, as well as select Cue Phones 1–3 in addition to Main Out. Select is used to gang channels together. On this page too, 8 LCD areas and VU meters help you keep track of the channels.

The preset also handles the handshake with the UCX in stand-alone mode, so that the basic controls work there as well. One special feature: the reduced LCD display information that the UCX outputs in stand-alone mode is converted, in Lua, into proper channel names on the LCD areas. This should also work for RME devices with the same channel layout — and can otherwise be adjusted in the Lua code.

All MIDI DIN communication runs through MIDI 2 Out and MIDI 2 In.
