My E1 Mini is much less bright than my mkII, even when on maximum brightness.

Same here, it would be nice to have it a bit brighter.
While I would love a firmware fix, I suspect there is only so much that could be done in firmware to improve this. IIIRC there was a firmware update which imrproved the colors for better contrast.
Might be time to source an LED that plugs into the USB port. ;-0
