Electra one HW 2.30 and 2.40 mkI -> mkII upgrade guide

I do think that your units are a little bit special

In general, the major difference between early and later E1 mk1s is in the power supplies. The newer ones run the LCD panel at 5V and have extra regulator and voltage reference for the touch sensing chips (LCD and pots). That change allowed us to decrease the power consumption and have touch sensing stable even when the USB voltage was noisy or unstable.

The LCD panel can be reconfigured by adjusting the solder-jumpers. The voltage regulators are close to impossible to add. If you take a photo of the components side of both the display board and the mainboard, I will be able to tell what needs to be done to upgrade it. PM would be the best for that.

I’d be happy to purchase one from you with a minor flaw because there are several configuration selections with the link you supplied and I know the one you supply is correctly sourced. I am happy to order it through them though if that is easier so just let me know. If so would I select a 8080 or 6800 pin header or is it using spi or i2c pin header. It sounds like for the red usb hub mk1 board a 5v supply is what I would select and I would also select sd pin header rather than ffc and capacitive rather than resistive touch panel. I can email you to discuss this further if that is preferred. Thanks

If you decide to purchase at EastRising (buydisplay.com) make sure it is:

4-wire SPI
5V
40 pin header (no FFC)
8 pin for the SD card (no FFC)
capacitive touch

like this:

you may want to ask them to configure the display to use the internal backlight PWM. If they refuse, I can guide you through it - simple soldering involved only.

If you decided the purchase from us, we would ship a refurbished LCD with the laminated glass, a set of knobs and the plastic internal spacers. You would still need to 3d print the case and bottom plate. It would be around the same price as the new LCD from EastRising. If you prefer this way, ping me on the PM.

Wow thanks, that is super helpful and I’ll hit you up soon.

Hi!

Late to the party!

I have an mk1 that I would like to upgrade to mk2.

Is this update still available?

cheers!

upgrade kits are still available! I will respond to your email, I just did not have a moment to respond

Thanks a lot!

Hi @martin, can you provide me an order form for the upgrade Mk1 => Mk 2 ?

Hi @stubbe @martin

this is a great tutorial, and I managed to do the upgrade, bit it did not yet end well.

A difference compared to the tutorial: the instructions speak about a 40 pin and 8 pin connector. The 8 pin connector however is not present on the Mk2 PCB. Is that to be expected?

Anyways, the upgrade failed at the end. I managed to build everything together, the display lit up, I was able to connect the E1 to the PC, where I got the message to update its firmware.

So far , so good.

I initiated the firmware update which took a while: It it went through at least two update loops. Those took 5 to 15 minutes to complete (I didn’t measure) but then it got stuck on the display message ‘updating the firmware’. As nothing was happening anymore (not on the E1, not on the PC) I kept it on that screen for more than 10 minutes, and then disconnected and reconnected the E1.

Since then it’s dead in the water, as they say. Not even the screen lights up. How do I recover from here?

Hi Ignace,

do not worry, I am pretty sure we can fix it.

yes, that is correct. That connector is used to connect the SD card. mk1 has the slot on the display board, hence it is needed there. On the mk2 the slot is directly on the mainboard.

this is good. that means that your upgrade went well - in terms of hardware. What is strange is that you got this firmware update message. Zdenek flashes the latest firmware to the controllers (and upgrade kits) prior to shipping them.

to fix it, as the first step, pls try to enter the bootloader. ie. start the controller with the right-bottom button pressed. If the bootloader starts follow the instructions from Bootloader | Electra One Documentation to update the controller with the firmware from Electra One firmware | Electra One Documentation .

Let me know if that update went ok. If not, describe what is happening. Thanks!
