How to control 2 devices / presets in 1 setup?

Hi all, I have enjoyed using the Electra One with the Nord Drum 3P and also with my Synthstrom Deluge now that the community firmware has Midi Follow mode.
Both are working really fluidly, but now I would like to use both devices together in 1 setup and ideally have some way of switching between them on the Electra One.
Because both of the presets rely on sending and receiving midi CCs to and from the device, I worry that if I switched between presets they would not receive all the latest settings from the devices until I changed patches or something on each device which resulted in a send.
Can anyone suggest how I should achieve this? Can I maybe merge the 2 presets together to make a single Deluge + Drum 3P preset with lots of pages and set each instrument in the preset to send and receive to a specific midi port on the E1?
any suggestions gratefully received.
thanks,
James

Isn’t this a case of just adding more device definitions in your preset, and referring the controls in the preset accordingly?

The question is whether an Electra One preset can be loaded, but not current and still receive a sysex dump (or CC/NRPN changes). I don’t think it can, but I haven’t tried it.

MK2 can, mk1 not

That sounds right :slightly_smiling_face:
I guess just because all the presets I saw in the Preset Library were only for 1 specific device, I wondered if it’s possible to combine them into a preset which handles multiple devices over many pages. Sounds like the answer is yes :grinning:

You can make presets for up to 32 devices. While this is not very practical for sound design (which is what most presets aim for, as this is quite independent from every one’s setup), it can be interesting for your own studio , for a gig, or for a specific song to create such multidevice presets. You should at least try this: make your own preset with at least 2 controls for 2 synths. It will inspire you.

I’ve been mostly working with one device per preset, as sound-design and full exposure of a midi-capable (usually hardware) synth/processor is of interest.

Once I have well working setups for most of my devices, I plan to make a preset including the most important parameters from the synths I want to record simultaneously; a sort of “control-room” preset where I can easily adjust say volume, filter cutoff, envelope decay/release and some important modulation amounts from each of the main synths/effect processors in the studio. This is to have a (preferrably one page or so) access to the parameters I might want to control or automate during the recording phase.

I will eventually also create a “live-setup” preset, focused on the tools I use for playing live. It will probably look alot like the “control-room” preset, but for other devices/parameters, and a with a priority given to ergonomics and clarity.

are there any tips for merging 2 existing presets together?
Can I just move the pages around on each so that they don’t conflict and then merge the 2 JSONs together or something?

No, you can’t just like that, but it is often possible

Check two things.

  • Are both presets with lua ? If they are, it’s complicated and you should not do it without understanding the presets fully… If none has lua or only one, then use the one with lua as basis preset for merging the other.
  • Before merging , ensure all controls of the preset that will be added to the basis are referring to a different device than the one / ones in use in the basis preset. If not, their controls will overlap.
